Why Bonajovis Will Be the Top hotel and casino resort in Southern Europe

Some places are built to impress. A rare few are built to be remembered — the kind of address you mention to friends years later, still smiling.

Bonajovis was conceived as exactly that kind of place. Set on eleven hectares of terraced gardens above the Atlantic, the estate brings together a meticulously restored 1920s grand hotel, a light-filled contemporary garden wing, seven restaurants and bars, three theatres and one of the largest thermal spas on the Iberian Peninsula. Everything sits within a short, shaded stroll of everything else, so a morning swim, a long lunch, an afternoon massage and a curtain-up evening can unfold without a single car journey.

We have designed the resort around the rhythm of a perfect day on the Algarve: slow, bright mornings; long, unhurried lunches; golden afternoons by the water; and evenings that stretch late into the warm night air. Our 286 rooms and suites, the majority with private terraces and uninterrupted ocean views, are the heart of that experience. Our kitchens are led by chefs who have cooked in some of Europe's most celebrated dining rooms, and our theatres will host international touring productions, chamber music, fado and contemporary dance throughout the year.

Above all, Bonajovis is a hotel first. Every decision — from the weight of the linen to the height of the bedside lamps — has been made with one question in mind: will this make a guest's stay more comfortable, more beautiful and more personal?

Our History

A Coastline Story Two Centuries in the Making

Long before the Algarve became one of Europe's best-loved holiday coasts, the headland where Bonajovis now stands was a working estate known locally as the Quinta da Boa Jóia — the "farm of the good jewel" — a name inspired by the way the low evening sun turned its whitewashed walls the colour of polished amber. From the 1840s, the quinta's owners traded sea salt harvested from the nearby lagoons and cork stripped from the oak groves inland, shipping both from the little harbour below the cliffs to Lisbon, Cádiz and beyond.

1847The main farmhouse, salt stores and stone cisterns are built. Several of the original cisterns survive today and have been transformed into the vaulted pools of our thermal spa.
1926A Lisbon shipping family acquires the estate and opens the Grande Hotel Boa Jóia, an elegant Art Deco seaside retreat with forty rooms, a ballroom and a small private theatre.
1930s – 1960sThe golden era. Writers, musicians and diplomats summer on the terraces; the theatre hosts touring opera companies and the legendary midsummer fado nights.
1974 – 2019Changing fortunes lead to the hotel's quiet closure. The buildings stand silent, protected by a heritage listing that preserves the façade, ballroom ceiling and theatre proscenium.
2021 – 2027A six-year restoration begins, guided by conservation architects. The estate is reborn as Bonajovis — a contraction of "boa jóia" and a nod to the joy of the visit.

The restoration has been a labour of patience. More than 14,000 hand-painted azulejo tiles were removed, catalogued, cleaned and reset; the ballroom's plaster ceiling, with its garlands of sculpted citrus and seashells, was consolidated by specialist conservators; and the original 1926 theatre proscenium, carved in Brazilian jacaranda, has been returned to its full glory as the centrepiece of our intimate Studio Theatre.

Around this heritage core, a new garden wing designed in pale limestone and timber steps gently down the hillside, its planted roofs blending into the landscape so that from the sea the estate still reads, as it always has, as a white jewel set in green. History is not a theme at Bonajovis; it is the foundation on which every new memory will be built.

"We did not want to build a new hotel. We wanted to give an old one back its voice — and then invite the world to come and listen."

Accommodation

Luxury Suites Designed for Light, Sea and Stillness

Every one of our 286 rooms and suites has been designed by an atelier team that spent a full year studying how the Algarve light moves through the day. The result is a palette of chalk white, sea-glass green, terracotta blush and soft gold; floors of honed limestone and warm oak; and floor-to-ceiling glazing that slides away completely, turning each room into a pavilion open to the breeze.

Beds are handmade in Portugal with natural-fibre mattresses and dressed in 400-thread-count percale woven in the north of the country. Bathrooms feature deep stone soaking tubs, rainfall showers, heated floors and amenities blended exclusively for us from Algarve orange blossom, wild rosemary and sea fennel. A discreet pantry offers locally roasted coffee, loose-leaf teas and a curated selection of Portuguese wines. Technology is present but invisible: one bedside tablet controls lighting, shading and climate, and you may ask our team to remove it entirely if you would rather disconnect.

Fine Dining

Seven Kitchens, One Philosophy: The Coast on a Plate

The Algarve has one of Europe's most generous larders. Fishermen land red mullet, sea bream and carabineiro prawns each morning at the harbours of Quarteira and Olhão; the hills behind the coast are covered in carob, almond, fig and orange trees; and the region's young winemakers are producing some of the most exciting whites and rosés in the Iberian Peninsula. Our culinary team has spent three years building relationships with these growers, fishers and producers so that, from the first day, our menus reflect the very best of the season.

Across seven restaurants and bars, the style ranges from a twelve-course tasting menu to a barefoot beach grill, but the philosophy is consistent: cook with respect for the ingredient, serve with warmth rather than ceremony, and let the views do the rest. Below is a preview of the menus we are developing for opening season. Dishes will evolve with the harvest, and every kitchen will cater to vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and allergy-specific requirements with the same creativity as the main menu.

Wine, Cellar and Private Dining

Beneath the heritage building, the original 1847 salt store has been converted into a candle-lit cellar holding more than 6,000 bottles, with particular depth in Douro reds, vintage and colheita Ports, Madeira and the new wave of Algarve wines from Lagoa and Lagos. Our head sommelier hosts weekly tastings at the long oak table, which can also be reserved for private dinners of up to eighteen guests. Two further private dining rooms overlook the gardens, and our events team can arrange beach dinners, vineyard picnics and chef's table experiences in the main kitchen.

Completing the collection, the Library Bar offers rare spirits and classic cocktails beside a fireplace in winter, and the Lagoon Bar serves fresh juices, light bites and chilled rosé to sun loungers around our main pool.

Theatres & Performance

Three Stages, One Season That Never Ends

Performance has been part of this estate since 1926, when the original hotel opened with a small private theatre for its guests. We are proud to continue that tradition on a scale the founders could only have dreamed of. Bonajovis will house three distinct performance spaces, each with its own character, programmed year-round by a dedicated artistic director.

The Grand Theatre

A 1,200-seat horseshoe auditorium with acoustics designed by an internationally respected consultancy, a fully flown fly tower and an orchestra pit for up to sixty musicians. The Grand Theatre is built to host West End and Broadway touring productions, ballet, symphonic concerts and headline performers. Seats are upholstered in a soft coral velvet, and every one of them offers a clear sightline to the stage.

The Studio Theatre

Inside the restored heritage building, the original 1926 theatre has been reborn as a jewel-box space for 220 guests, framed by its carved jacaranda proscenium. Expect intimate chamber music, jazz, cabaret, comedy, spoken word and — on summer Fridays — the return of the legendary midsummer fado nights.

The Garden Amphitheatre

Carved into the natural slope of the gardens and facing the sunset over the Atlantic, our open-air amphitheatre seats 800 on terraced stone steps softened with cushions. From May to October it will host open-air cinema, dance festivals, family matinées and moonlit concerts.

Opening Season Highlights — Summer 2027

  • A gala opening concert with a celebrated European symphony orchestra
  • A four-week residency by an award-winning contemporary dance company
  • The Algarve Fado Festival in the Studio Theatre
  • Open-air cinema classics under the stars every Sunday
  • A family musical matinée series throughout the school holidays

Resort guests enjoy priority booking, and many suite categories include two complimentary performance tickets per stay.

Spa & Wellbeing

The Cistern Spa: Restoration in Stone and Water

Our 4,200-square-metre spa is built around the vaulted stone cisterns of the 1847 quinta. Where rainwater was once stored for the estate's orchards, guests now drift between a warm mineral pool, a cold plunge fed by a natural spring, a salt-water floatation chamber and a steam grotto infused with eucalyptus and wild thyme. Natural light falls through restored oculi in the vaulted ceilings, shifting across the water through the day.

Fourteen treatment rooms, two couples' suites with private terraces and a dedicated hammam offer a menu that draws on the Algarve's coastal botanicals: sea-salt scrubs from the Ria Formosa lagoons, warm olive and almond oil massages, and facials using locally grown seaweed and carob. Alongside the treatment menu, our wellbeing team offers sunrise yoga on the clifftop lawn, Pilates, breathwork, sound baths and personal training in a fully equipped fitness pavilion overlooking the ocean.

90 minutes

The Salt & Sun Ritual

A full-body exfoliation with Ria Formosa sea salt, a warm almond oil massage and a scalp treatment with rosemary and orange blossom.

3 or 5 days

Restore Retreats

Personalised programmes combining daily treatments, nutrition consultations, movement sessions and a menu designed by our chefs and nutritionist.

Half day

Thermal Journey

A guided circuit through the warm pool, cold spring plunge, steam grotto and floatation chamber, finished with herbal tea in the relaxation gallery.

Evenings at Bonajovis

The Salon de Jeu: An Elegant Coda to the Evening

Reached through the restored Art Deco ballroom foyer, our evening salon is a refined, adults-only space for guests who enjoy a little after-dinner excitement. Designed in blush lacquer, brass and soft lighting, it is intentionally intimate rather than sprawling — a lounge to visit for an hour between the curtain call and a nightcap at the Library Bar.

The casino salon will open in June 2027 alongside the rest of the resort and will operate under full licence from the Portuguese authorities, with mandatory age verification on entry and a firm commitment to player wellbeing. You can read about the protections we offer on our responsible play page.

For most of our guests, however, the evening is about something simpler: a beautiful dinner, a performance to remember, and a walk back through the jasmine-scented gardens to a suite with the sound of the ocean below.

Celebrations & Meetings

Weddings, Events and Gatherings with a Sense of Occasion

The restored ballroom, with its sculpted ceiling and sea-facing French doors, accommodates 350 guests for a seated dinner, while the clifftop lawn hosts ceremonies of up to 500 against the backdrop of the Atlantic. Our dedicated events team plans weddings, milestone birthdays, family reunions and corporate retreats from first enquiry to final farewell, with flowers grown in our own cutting garden, menus designed by our chefs and entertainment curated by our theatre team. Six flexible meeting rooms with natural daylight and the latest audiovisual technology make Bonajovis an inspiring setting for leadership summits and incentive journeys.
